About the Program

Founded in 1940, the Florida Boys State program is a hands-on, participatory experience that immerses students in the functioning of local, county, and state government. Participants gain a practical understanding of the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of engaged citizenship while developing leadership skills through simulated political processes and civic exercises. The program also includes instruction on the legal and judicial systems, parliamentary procedure, and Florida history, providing a comprehensive foundation in government operations.

Goals

• To promote a strong interest in the detailed study of the pollical process, legislature, the judicial system, and Florida history.
• To strengthen the understanding of American traditions and loyalty to the United States of America.
• To motivate young citizens to maintain and participate in our government and the democratic process.

• To safeguard the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy.

About the Store

Our current funding is provided by the Florida American Legion, which generously sponsors program participants at a rate of $495 per student. Additionally, the Legion covers transportation costs, which fall outside the Florida American Legion Boys State (FALBS) budget. While this support is substantial, our program aims to sponsor 500+ student participants annually, with the total cost per participant averaging approximately $695. This results in a funding shortfall of roughly $200 per student.

Despite our commitment to operating as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible, program expenses continue to rise. In 2024, housing costs exceeded $92,000, equating to approximately $201 per participant—an increase from $193 in 2021. Similarly, meal expenses reached nearly $120,000, or approximately $259 per participant, compared to $203 in 2021. We continuously negotiate with vendors to secure the most competitive pricing available.

Florida American Legion Boys State remains dedicated to offering this program at no cost to student participants, their families, or our volunteer staff, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent any eligible student from participating.
