Sardinha Falls is the county seat of Navy County and is located due South of Davidson City. It is one of the largest municipalities in the state and has a population of 359,076. It sits right on the Atlantic Ocean and is a major tourist destination. The city generates over $89 million annually and owns four power plants that provide the city and surrounding areas with electricity. In fact, over $59 million in revenues is generated from utilities.

CITY HISTORY

Sardinha Falls is named for Frank Sardinha, III. Frank is the Judicial Branch Lecturer. Since attending as a Delegate in 2005, Frank has served the program as City Counselor, Dean of the Senate, Director of Activities, Assistant Director, Director, and is a current member of the Boys State Board of Directors. Frank is a native of Jupiter, FL and a proud graduate of the University of Florida and the University of Miami School of Law. He currently practices law in Miami.

Water, Wastewater and Flood Management:

Sardinha Falls is one of the cities most affected by rising sea levels due to its low elevation and proximity to the coast. Coastal areas experience frequent flooding, especially during king tides (seasonal high tides). Rising sea levels allow saltwater to seep into freshwater aquifers, threatening the city’s drinking water supply.
Heavy rainfall, storm surges, and inadequate drainage infrastructure exacerbate flooding in the city. Even in the absence of rain, tidal flooding in low-lying areas has become increasingly common.
Sardinha Falls is highly vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms. These extreme weather events can cause widespread destruction, disrupt infrastructure, and endanger lives. The urban heat island effect, combined with global warming, leads to higher temperatures in the city, affecting health and energy consumption.
Pollutants from stormwater runoff, sewage leaks, and agricultural chemicals have led to the degradation of Sardinha Falls Bay, a vital ecosystem and recreational area. Many properties in Miami still rely on aging septic systems, which can overflow during heavy rains, contaminating local water bodies.
