ABOUT THE CITY

Hillandale is one of the smallest communities in the State. Most citizens are employed in the agriculture industry or at the local State Prison.  Local Sports are huge within the community. In fact, The “Hornets” of Wehrli County High have won the State’s 1-A Football Championship for the past 5 years in a row. The small town is also known as the cave diving capital of the world with over 14 first-magnitude springs located along the Coleman River.

CITY HISTORY

  • Hillandale is named for Clarence Hill and Jonathan (“Jon”) Hill. Clarence was a 1967 Delegate to Buckeye Boys State and a 1972 Naval Academy graduate. He retired as a Captain in 1996 after a 24 year career in the Navy. He has been a Boys State Counselor since 1997. Clarence, a member of Atlantic Beach Post 316 for over 30 years, served as Department Commander from 2002 – 2003. He was elected the 91st National Commander of the American Legion and the First National Commander from Florida serving 2009 – 2010. 
  • Jon Hill was a 2000 Boys State Delegate from Post 23 in Fort Meade and has been an active volunteer at Boys State for many years. Over the years he has served in many different roles including Assistant Director, City Counselor Staff Morale Counselor, and Technology Coordinator. In his professional life, Jon is Director of Engineering for Siemens Energy Management Division where he leads an organization focused on creating innovative solutions addressing the changing energy needs of today and the future. He holds degrees in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and an MBA.

Most citizens are employed in the agriculture industry or at the local State Prison.  Local Sports are huge within the community. In fact, The “Hornets” of Wehrli County High have won the State’s 1-A Football Championship for the past 5 years in a row. The small town is also known as the cave diving capital of the world with over 14 first-magnitude springs located along the Coleman River.  The Coleman River is named for Rhettimus Tiberious Coleman, of the famed R.T. Coleman Traveling Menagerie, which later became R.T. Coleman Circus, who built his winter home along the river in the early 1800’s.  His descendent RT Coleman is now the purveyor of the RT Coleman Circus Virtual an AI circus experience. 
  • Hillandale epitomizes small-town America, offering a peaceful and tranquil setting for residents. The town is easily accessible by car, with ample parking available.  The area is rich with natural beauty, from its rolling hills to its lakes and rivers. There are plenty of outdoor activities to do, including fishing, hunting, boating, camping, and swimming.  Hillandale is in proximity to several natural attractions, including Wehrli Blue Springs State Park and Peacock Springs State Park, making it a favorable spot for camping and outdoor activities.  The town's historic downtown area features quaint shops and restaurants, contributing to its charm. Notable historic structures include the 1883 Old Wehrli County Courthouse, now a bed and breakfast, and the 1908 Wehrli County Courthouse.  Hillandale's strategic location offers easy access to larger cities such as Glover City, Trooperille, and Knight Station, providing residents with additional amenities and services.  Overall, Hillandale offers a blend of historical charm, natural beauty, and a close-knit community, making it a unique and inviting place.
